Enjoy an acoustic evening celebrating the life of Automatic Slim with Jim Harrell & Friends.
He was known in Baltimore as Slim, and fans south of Laurel call him Automatic. David Carreon made Catonsville his home and was performing as Automatic Slim since 1988, sometimes with his Sensational Band.
FROM AN INTERVIEW IN THE FREDERICK NEWS POST APRIL 30, 2010
Im not that tall and Im not that thin, he admitted, adding that hes going on 50 but will always make time for music. The name came from the classic onechord song Wang Dang Doodle. He created the name as an alter ego when he moved to Maryland in 1986, and it stuck.
The blues boy grew up in southern Chicago.
He started out on trumpet but quickly knew he wanted to learn guitar, like his father.
Back then I didnt sing too much. It seemed like a real difficult thing for me.
Just north of his home was the southside of Chicago, where hed sneak into bars with his friends to hear legendary blues artists though he didnt know they were legendary at the time, just that they were good.
“We were just happy to get into the bar, he said.
He saw Mighty Joe Young, Lefty Dizz (Before he even played the guitar, you were entertained.), Keith Richards, Eddie Taylor, Ronnie Brooks, Jimmy Rogers, Buddy Guy ($3 cover), Muddy Waters, the list goes on.
And I was able to talk to them, he said. A lot of times they were just sitting at the bar. … At the time, we didnt know that (Buddy Guy) was Jimi Hendrixs favorite guitar player, and Eric Claptons favorite guitar player.
I dont think blues will ever be super trendy, but I dont think it will ever go away, he said. The influence is everywhere.
